Water Treatment Plant

Advanced Research on Scale Prevention in Thermal Power Plant Condenser Cooling Systems

PSK Infracontract Pvt Ltd is not only engaged in solar and infrastructure development but is also actively involved in research and innovation in conventional and clean energy systems, with a strong focus on improving efficiency, water conservation, and operational sustainability in power generation.
As part of this commitment, PSK Infracontract Pvt Ltd has successfully carried out an experimental research study at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Chennai) as Industrialm partner to study this technology on improving condenser cooling water performance in coal-based thermal power stations.

Water Treatment Research

Experimental Investigation at IIT Chennai

A prototype test bed was developed in the Heat Transfer Laboratory at IIT Chennai to simulate an actual condenser cooling water system used in thermal power plants. The experimental setup was designed using actual condenser tube materials commonly deployed in operating coal-based power stations. The research focused on the Experimental Investigation of Magnetic Force Interaction with Scale-Forming Elements in Condenser Cooling Water Systems.

Sustainable Innovation

The experimental study demonstrated that:

• No scale formation was observed on condenser tube surfaces
• When a magnetic separator was incorporated into the cooling water circulation loop
• Under simulated operating conditions closely matching real thermal power plant environments
This clearly indicates the effectiveness of magnetic separation technology in preventing scale deposition without the use of chemical additives.

Thermal Power Plants

Key Outcomes & Technical Significance

• ✔️ Elimination of chemical water treatment in condenser cooling systems
• ✔️ Reduction in scaling and fouling of condenser tubes
• ✔️ Improved heat transfer efficiency of condensers
• ✔️ Increase in cycles of concentration, leading to significant water savings
• ✔️ Lower operating and maintenance costs
• ✔️ Environmentally sustainable and non-chemical solution
The results confirm that the magnetic separator–based system can replace conventional chemical dosing methods, which are costly, environmentally sensitive, and water-intensive.

IIT Research Collaboration

Leadership & Research Contribution

The research and experimental work were personally carried out and led by Mr. P. Selvakumar, Director – PSK Infracontract Pvt Ltd, at the IIT Chennai Heat Transfer Laboratory. The study reflects PSK’s hands-on involvement in applied engineering research aimed at solving real-world power plant operational challenges.

Future Energy Systems

Commercial & Investment Opportunity

This proven research outcome opens up a high-potential deployment opportunity for:
• 50 MW to 100 MW coal-based thermal power stations
• Existing plants seeking retrofit solutions
• New thermal projects aiming for reduced water footprint and OPEX
The technology offers a scalable, low-risk, and high-impact alternative to chemical treatment systems and aligns with increasing regulatory and ESG requirements for water conservation in thermal power plants.

Our Vision

PSK Infracontract Pvt Ltd continues to expand its role beyond renewable energy into innovative solutions for conventional power generation, bridging research, engineering, and commercial deployment. We actively welcome strategic investors, technology partners, and power plant owners interested in implementing this solution across thermal power assets
